What you need to know about Tooth Whitening
 |
Tooth whitening is a cosmetic procedure that is generally accomplished by application of a hydrogen peroxide solution to lighten the color of your teeth. Successful tooth whitening is sometimes completed in one application, though may be done in several applications depending on the depth of the stains. It is important that you understand what tooth whitening cannot do as it will not alter the color of veneers, fillings or crowns.
When performing our tooth whitening procedure, the first thing that we do is evaluate the overall health of your mouth. Those with periodontal disease, receding gums, sensitive teeth (to name a few)
|
may not be candidates for tooth whitening as it can damage the gums or make teeth more sensitive. The next step is a thorough cleaning and polishing. Once this is completed if you still feel that you wish to proceed with tooth whitening, then we will determine the color that will be most effective for you. Oftentimes people wish they had whiter teeth only to find that tooth whitening will not provide them with teeth as white as they’d anticipated.
Typically all teeth are not whitened at the same time. We will build a ‘dental dam’ to protect those teeth that are not being whitened and also to protect your gums and other soft tissue in order to prevent burning from the peroxide mixture during your tooth whitening procedure.
We will protect the skin on your upper body by placing a bib and protect your eyes by placing safety goggles to be worn during the tooth whitening process.

What you need to know about porcelain veneers
Because a porcelain veneer is made of porcelain, they are extremely stain resistant and are most often used cosmetically to either hide severe tooth staining or to repair a damaged, cracked or misshapen tooth. A porcelain veneer is especially helpful for those who smoke or who drink large amounts of coffee or tea (which can all lead to staining). Older bonding techniques did not allow the light to reflect off the teeth, which is what happens in normal tooth enamel. However, the porcelain in a veneer makes a much more natural appearing surface because it does reflect light. While porcelain is brittle by nature, it creates a firm bond when adhered to a tooth and a veneer will last for a very long time. A porcelain veneer is typically applied to only the front surface of the tooth.
Fred Gilbeaux, DDS, PC has put a porcelain veneer on more than one happy tooth in these areas from our practice in Jamesville, NY. What you need to know about crowns
Crowns unlike fillings cover the entire visible portion of your tooth. Material for crowns varies from porcelain to different metals. Also known as ‘caps’, crowns are often used to strengthen teeth that are weak due to injury (causing teeth to be slightly loose). Crowns are also helpful if you have had a deep filling that intrudes on the outside of any of your teeth (causing a tooth to lose its’ original shape). Crowns will last anywhere from five to fifteen years, depending on the stress that is placed upon it as a result of chewing, grinding of teeth, trauma, etc.
Fred Gilbeaux, DDS, PC has successfully added crowns to a number of teeth from our office in Jamesville, NY. We serve several satisfied customers from Liverpool, Tully, Baldwinsville, North Syracuse, and Cicero. We are also available to residents if DeWitt, Fayetteville, Manlius, Syracuse, and Cazenovia.

What you need to know about Dental Implant Restoration
Dental implants have three components: the prosthesis (i.e. crown or bridge) that the implants support, the fixture (what holds the dental implants in place) and the abutment (the stub that is above the gum line). Dental implants may be used for one or multiple teeth (depending on preference).
The prosthesis may be screwed in or it may be glued in depending on the design. The fixture of dental implants is typically made of titanium and may be either hollow or solid (depending on the manufacturer) and is considered the ‘root’ of the new tooth. The the abutment (comprised of crown or bridgework) would then be attached to the fixture within three to six months of placement.

What you need to know about tooth colored fillings
Cavities happen to nearly all of us at some point in our lives. They can be unsightly especially if they are large. Rather than cap a tooth, apply a veneer or put an amalgam filling (especially in front teeth which are easily seen when you mile) we can fill cavities with a substance that will match your natural tooth color and allow for a more natural appearance.
The procedure is similar to the process of filling cavities with amalgam; the fillings are just
prepared with a different mix of compounds.

What you need to know about dentures and aesthetic partials
Whether you’ve lost your natural teeth due to an accident, periodontal disease or your teeth have decayed, your appearance will dramatically change without teeth. If you have only a few teeth missing, you will be able to use a ‘partial’ and have it replace the missing teeth which allows you to chew, smile and talk as normal. If you've lost all of your top or your bottom teeth, you will need a denture to replace them. We can choose the right denture set from among several types. Your full denture set will be an important part of your appearance so it is critical that a skilled person measure and fit them to you. We will measure of your mouth (making a mold) and then will work with you to match the color of your denture to your existing teeth. Follow up care is extremely important with a denture set as sudden weight loss (or gain) can result in a poor fit, affecting your overall oral health and possible digestion (due to misalignment of your denture set).
Fred Gilbeaux, DDS, PC has made many mouths happy with a complete denture set from our practice in Jamesville, NY. From this location, we serve our patients in DeWitt, Fayetteville, Manlius, Syracuse, and Cazenovia. We can also be reached by residents of Liverpool, Tully, Baldwinsville, North Syracuse, and Cicero.

What you need to know about preventative care
It is imperative for your overall health that you have good preventative oral care. While daily brushing, flossing and rinsing go a long way towards your overall oral health, preventative treatments such as regular cleanings, fluoride treatments and polishing will add to your smile. Making sure you see your dentist annually for preventative care can also help uncover other health issues when your dentist or hygienist checks your gums for inflammation. Having good preventative care is preferable than trying to deal with cavities, and other procedures which may become necessary as a result of tooth problems that go undetected.
Fred Gilbeaux, DDS, PC regularly administers preventative care to several satisfied clients from our office in Jamesville, NY. We are conveniently located near DeWitt, Cicero, Fayetteville, North Syracuse, and Manlius. We also serve a number of patients from Baldwinsville, Syracuse, Tully, Cazenovia, and Liverpool.

What you need to know about periodontal treatments
Many people, regardless of how well they care for their teeth and gums, can develop a dental disease like periodontitis. Some common reasons for the dental disease known as periodontitis are smoking, diabetes, family history, and other diseases. Periodontitis is said to affect nearly fifty percent of the population over the age of 30. Proper tooth care including brushing, flossing, using an antiseptic mouthwash, and having regular dental checkups can help keep these common types of dental disease in check. However, some people will require deep scalings (removal of plaque and calculus from around the teeth and below the gum line). Left untreated, a dental disease like periodontitis can result not only in loss of teeth, but loss of jaw bone and gum line retraction. It is crucial that you work with your dentist and hygienist and carefully plan treatment fro your dental disease.
Fred Gilbeaux, DDS, PC has successfully treated many types of dental disease from our practice in Jamesville, NY. We maintain a steady stream of satisfied patients in the cities of Cicero, DeWitt, Baldwinsville, Manlius, and Fayetteville. We are also just a short drive from patients in North Syracuse, Cazenovia, Liverpool, Tully, and Syracuse.
